indexing your pages in google

Do you wonder how your content on your website gets picked up by the “Google Crawl Bot” and then placed into the search engine so that when someone types in a keyword your page shows up as a relevant match?Google algorithm is like a set of blueprints and unless you follow the blueprints exactly then you may end up with a stale website with no traffic. But here are some tips that may be beneficial to those who are interested in getting more of their content in the searches.

First the Google bot scans your page then determines relevancy and quality and places it into the SERPS in a process called indexing. A common problem for many website owners is that they wonder why they are getting little to no traffic to their site. One of the most common problems is that the pages either hasn’t been indexed into the search or the page is returning a 404 error. The average time it takes for a new page to be indexed depends on page structure, how new the site is, and how often content is added to the site. Let’s touch bases first on website structure.

A well written website consist of little to no flash, minimal use of Java Script and has a quick load time(under 1-2 seconds). Search engines have not advanced enough yet to read flash like it does HTML, PHP, or other types of code. There are some flash sites built with deep linking and is somewhat readable, but if possible try to avoid using flash to develop a whole site. If you main focus is just for show then flash is great, but if you are trying to bring in additional customers and convert users, then it’s best to go with a code that is search engine friendly. Java script should be used sparingly. When you are creating forms in Java Script then it’s best to place that form under “no-index-no-follow” in your robots meta file. We will touch basis on this later, but for now if you have a whole post or page in Java Script then it’s good to apply the no-index-no-follow attribute. Loading time is a factor in whether the Google crawler will index your page. If the Google bot spends too much time trying to read through a page because of slow load times then it’s a good possibility that the page will not be indexed in the search. Try to bring the load speed of your pages below 1 second by using “WP-Super-Cache” or W3 Total Cache plugins. W3 Total Cache is a bit top heavy and if not properly set up can cause quite a bit of 404 errors. Total Cache is best for sites with heavy traffic so use WP-Super-Cache if you don’t want to get too advanced with a plugins settings.

The age of the domain may play a factor in how often your pages gets indexed. For sites that are relatively new the number of pages indexed will be low for about 1-6 months. But the rate of pages indexed for new sites depends on the amount of content being added daily or weekly. So a new site where content is constantly being added may have more pages indexed in a day than a site with stale content. In other words there is a correlation between how often a site is updated and the frequency that your pages will get indexed in the search engine. A simple example would be:

New Domain + Fresh Content daily/weekly = increased number of pages indexed
New Domain + Rarely Updated = low number of pages indexed (if any)
